2/27/2008 1. Pinotage (100g): Baby Ull - note: with Brigitte on consignment
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9867832
Hand-painted in purple, periwinkle, silver gray and a tiny spot of pink -- hated it!!  Overdyed the whole thing in black (lightly -- 1/2 syringe for the whole skein). Note: I might have re-painted, except that it was super-long, wound on melli's mantle, and kind of tough to manage in the tray. The yarn is super-thirsty, and I ended up with way too much water (it was already running clear in the tray), so I didn't want to manage that a second time.  But it turned out lovely!!!

Full City Roast is a hearty semisolid mix of browns, from deep dark espresso to pale toasty browns. Like coffee in your hands, mmmmm.

This is a one-of-a-kind, hand dyed yarn, suitable for most sock projects. The yarn is painted with permanent acid dyes using multiple methods, to achieve a rich, layered result.

Skein weight: 100 grams (1.76 ounces)

2/27/2008 2. Tangled up in Blue (100g): Baby Ull - SOLD to Mom
Underdyed in a kettle with light silver gray (1/3 syringe), then hand-painted in emerald, royal/teal, jet black, and gunmetal (3/4 syringe of each); steamed; added a little black to the emerald and re-painted, also re-painted the jet black
Tangled up in Blue is wild and viney, the rich greens of a woodsy cottage and a cloudless summer day. It is a hand-painted blend, with short regular repeats that will striate or pool depending entirely on your gauge and pattern choice.

One-of-a-kind, hand dyed yarn, suitable for most sock projects. The blank is Baby Ull -- super soft, and machine-washable!! The yarn is dyed with permanent acid dyes using multiple methods.

Underdyed in a kettle with silver gray + a tiny bit of royal (left part of the skein out of the pot); kettle dyed with syringes in emerald (plus a little black), royal/teal, and gunmetal; pulled out of the pot and painted black spots & steamed; Touched up a few colors and re-steamed

4. Summer Pine (100g): KnitPicks merino fingering
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9915369
emerald and black, 5::1  (about 20mL, I think) - all mixed before adding fiber. The semi-solid effect is from kettle-dyeing and letting the yarn sit for a while with parts exposed to the air, and squirting in dye just to certain areas. I let the yarn sit almost the whole time with this one, but added add'l dye while it sat.
note: brigitte really likes this one -- try to replicate the effect
Summer pine is verdant, alive with growth and possibility. The variegations are subtle, such that it will not striate or pool, but will add depth and texture to your finished project.

Sold in smaller skeins to give you options for striping, colorwork, or smaller projects, semisolids are kettle-dyed using low-water immersion to achieve subtle variations in color that will add depth to your finished project.
Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)

5. Daffodil (100g): KnitPicks merino fingering
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9915563
20mL Sun Yellow, plus the 20mL of Yellow w/ a squirt of jet black - all mixed before adding fiber. The semi-solid effect is from kettle-dyeing and letting the yarn sit for a while with parts exposed to the air, and squirting in dye just to certain areas.
I kept this one moving a bit more the whole time it was in the bath, to get a more solid effect.
Daffodil is a delicate, happy spring flower. The variegations are subtle, such that it will not striate or pool, but will add depth and texture to your finished project.

Sold in smaller skeins to give you options for striping, colorwork, or smaller projects: Semisolids are kettle-dyed using low-water immersion to achieve subtle variations in color that will add depth to your finished project.

6. Nightswimming (100g): KnitPicks merino fingering
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9915669
20-40mL turquoise, then painted w/ black (dry!!). The semi-solid effect is from kettle-dyeing and letting the yarn sit for a while with parts exposed to the air, and squirting in dye just to certain areas.

Sold one mini-skein of this on 3/25 - discovered the ball was short (93g), so I'll only get two more out of this -- try to give everyone 5g or so extra.
Nightswimming is a rich ocean blue, toes stretching to reach the edge of the deep black beyond. It will not stripe on its own, but other than that, what it does is entirely a function of your gauge and pattern choice!

Sold in smaller skeins to give you options for striping, colorwork, or smaller projects, my semisolids are kettle-dyed using low-water immersion to achieve subtle variations in color that will add depth to your finished project.
Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)

7. Redpop (100g): KnitPicks merino fingering
20mL Crimson ?
I let it exhaust the initial 20mL, then squirted another 20mL around the pot so that the top layer got an extra dose. The semi-solid effect is from kettle-dyeing and letting the yarn sit for a while with parts exposed to the air, and squirting in dye just to certain areas.

Redpop is a breath of cool air, a soothing blend of crimson and pink. The variegations are subtle, such that it will not striate or pool, but will add depth and texture to your finished project.

Semisolids are kettle-dyed using low-water immersion to achieve subtle variations in color that will add depth to your finished project.

9. Robin's Egg (300g): KnitPicks peruvian highland worsted
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10085706
light teal (maybe 40mL total??)
It was interesting that the cooler part of the green didn't exhaust as much -- leaving this nice pale greeny blue.  Will have to do more and pay closer attention to dye concentration.
Robin's eggs are precious harbingers of spring, and this yarn is a reminder that warmer weather and the robin's song is truly around the corner! Three skeins of this colorway are available, all kettle-dyed together for a consistent color across your project.

Layered in the kettle, with dye in the pot first -- the group below varies in technique -- some stirred and some not.

These are some fierce grapes! Deep, dark, rich purples with just a touch of lavender and pink to keep things interesting. I almost kept this skein back for myself, I'm so anxious to see it knit up!

16. Tulip Time (500g): knitpicks peruvian highland worsted
Mixed 6oz each of light purple (8mL), dark purple (20mL), light teal (8mL), light silver grey (8mL), and periwinkle (8mL) - amounts are approximate.  Painted each skein individually, steamed together. Re-painted with light purple and dark purple, re-steamed.  Mixed a pink and re-painted the pink sections; mixed a navy blue and painted over the teal (which was supposed to be more of a robin's egg). I think it's actually done now!! They'll be sold as siblings... since they're not identical, but of the same family.
sold all 5 to Step!!
Tulip time is a family of 5: not identical, but siblings. Each of the five skeins available were individually hand-painted from the same dye pots, so while they share much of their genetic material, they will definitely work up differently. For the knitter who relies on consistent variegation or pooling throughout your project, alternating skeins might be advised. Otherwise, enjoy!! The painting technique used will produce mostly regular variegation in each skein, with just a bit of randomness. Hey, we all need a little randomness in our lives!!

17. Deep Water (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
Kettle-dyed, beginning with 8mL turquoise.  Too bright/pure of a turquoise for my liking, so I overdyed with 10mL royal + 5mL black (mixed, mostly)  Quite a nice blue, but I wanted some depth to it, so I added 10mL kelly to the inside of the circle, left it a few minutes, then swirled once, re-set and put 5mL black in the center and let sit.  It's a little dark for me, but someone will like it (hopefully!)
Deep water is a kettle-dyed subtle variegate. Nothing crazy, no striping, just enough variation in color to keep it interesting.  From rich aqua ocean to pure blue sky, with just a touch of kelpy green
Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)

18. Celery (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
Kettle-dyed solid; 5mL kelly + 4mL silver grey (mixed).
Celery is delicate, light, wispy. An almost pure solid, the kettle process gives it just a touch of subtle variation. Definitely begging to be on the needles, worked up in your favorite fancy sock pattern. Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)
Yardage: 440 yards

19. Wintergreen (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
Kettle-dyed semisolid; 8mL emerald + 2mL black exhausted. Added 2mL emerald, let it exhaust, re-set and repeated with another 2mL
Wintergreen is a fresh burst of color through unexpected spring snow, new leaves stretching to the sky.
Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)
Yardage: 440 yards
Skein weight: 100 grams (1.76 ounces)
Gauge: 7 - 8 sts = 1"

20. Olive Bar (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
This was loden attempt #1 -- I prefer this one.
Kettle-dyed semisolid; 5mL emerald + 3mL teal + 15mL aztec gold exhausted. Added 10mL aztec + 5mL emerald to exhaustion.

Like this one in terms of a loden attempt -- but it's still not quite right, not quite "fresh" enough... maybe use sun yellow instead, and then add black to get the right shade??
Who doesn't love an olive bar? Toothpick in hand, you have to try them all... this yarn might be best worked up with a martini close at hand!
Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)
Yardage: 440 yards
Skein weight: 100 grams (1.76 ounces)
Gauge: 7 - 8 sts = 1"

21. Olive You Too (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
This was loden attempt #2 -- too blue, I think.
Kettle-dyed semisolid; 10mL Kelly + 10mL aztec exhausted. Added 10mL emerald + 5mL black.
note: the yellow strikes FAST!!  This was initially a very yellow skein.
Olive you too is a more staid version of its cousin, olive bar. Think of it as a sort of tapenade for your needles.
Weight: Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)
Yardage: 440 yards
Skein weight: 100 grams (1.76 ounces)

22. Grape Expectations (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
Multi-layer process in the kettle -- sell at the painted rate.
Mixed 10mL crimson, 10mL black, and 20mL navy in a squeeze bottle & filled with water (saved).
Solid mix in kettle, set yarn, squirt of mix in the center.
Let almost exhaust, re-set.
Mix squirt of black and 5mL purple in kettle, re-set yarn, left to exhaust.
Mix 2mL chestnut, re-set yarn, let almost exhaust.
Re-set, squirt of black in center.
Fat purple grapes, not-quite-jelly grapes, more poi than pinot grapes... these are Grape Expectations.

This is a one-of-a-kind, hand dyed yarn, suitable for most sock projects. Yarn is kettle-dyed with permanent acid dyes in multiple processes, to achieve a rich, layered result.

23. Fire Dancer (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
Kettle mix of crimson & aztec - trying for an even solid
Then re-set and squirted some of the 1:1 chestnut/aztec mix in spots

Fire Dancer burns long, rich russet and red, twirling around your needles and making you dizzy. Ok, maybe dizzy isn't a good thing while knitting. Regardless, this is a rich mix of reddish-browns, and would make someone's tootsies very happy.

This is a one-of-a-kind, hand dyed yarn, suitable for most sock projects. Yarn is kettle-dyed with permanent acid dyes in multiple processes, to achieve a rich, layered result.

26. Loden 3 (100g): KnitPicks Merino fingering
aztec gold, emerald, teal - earlier attempt was 25 / 10 / 3;
Mixed 15 / 10 / 5 in a squirt bottle, squirted in the pot, mixed, and set.
Emerald strikes first!  stayed too bright/cool, though.
Added 5 more of aztec to the bottle, squirted, re-mixed, re-set.
Still too blue; repeated with 5 more.
Squirted unevenly for final layer.
Final bottle mix: 25 / 10 / 5

note: next time try sun yellow instead of the aztec?  Or turquoise instead of teal?
Third in a series of mossy greens (Loden 1 = Olive Bar; Loden 2 = Olive You Too), Loden 3 will practically grow in your hands, it's just that verdant.

This is a one-of-a-kind, hand dyed yarn, suitable for most sock projects. Yarn is kettle-dyed with permanent acid dyes in multiple processes, to achieve a rich, layered result.

27. Test skein for Mel's batch: Loden 4
Test run of the formula(s) for Mel's sweater yarn. I mixed three formulas, but mostly I used the 1:3:6 mix, which is 1 part emerald, 3 parts turquoise, and 6 parts aztec gold. 9 skeins (1,980 yds) in this semisolid, and 1 skein (220 yds) in this plus black for bottom, cuff and collar ribbing.

28. April Fool's Gold Four Leaf Clover
An attempt at dyeing 2200 yds for Mel's sweater -- the green just struck too early, and I didn't have any more aztec gold. I'm not exactly sure what's missing, but that's the guess.  I also ran out of vinegar, so it may not have been acidic enough for the blue part of the turquoise to strike.
April Fool's Four Leaf Clover
What a Find!  9 skeins of matching semisolid shamrock green, with just a hint of gold. Perfect for felting, or that sweater you've been thinking about.

30. Graffiti (100g): KnitPicks Superwash/Nylon
first, just sprinkled dots of pink mixed with a little periwinkle, periwinkle, and silver grey. Kept layering that, then came back with other colors -- teal directly from my 3% stock, then crimson, then sun yellow into the grey (which made a sort of chartreuse).  Kinda cool, and I like the technique (but would probably underdye a solid color first).  Color bleeds when squirting; probably could get similar effect from narrow sponges.
kept for me!

Kettle yellow: 10mL Sun Yellow, plus less than 1 mL crimson and less than 1 mL black.  Then painted with 10mL purple / 4mL crimson, and 5 mL pink / 1mL crimson
My friend says this reminds her of Catholic school colors, but there's a bit of a wild streak in this skein that defies button-up blouses and penny loafers, so a compromise was reached on naming. Creamy yellow, rich red wine, and just a hint of pink.  Come on, aren't those feet itching for SOCKS?  If you start now, you'll have them finished for the first late summer cold snap.

This is a one-of-a-kind, hand dyed yarn, suitable for most sock projects. Yarn is kettle-dyed with permanent acid dyes in multiple processes, to achieve a rich, layered result.

Skein weight: 100 grams (1.76 ounces)

I may re-dye this one -- not sure I really like it that much.

Planning for melli's sweater:
The proportion of my mix is good -- the problem is that the emerald grabs like crazy, so I may need to alter the procedure.   And borrow a bigger kettle from Matthew!!

I think she likes Loden3 the best -- which is 25aztec/10emerald/5teal -- but try less emerald first off.  Or underdye with aztec?  Can also try underdying a good color but lighter, and repeat for darker.  The tough thing is doing all 2,000 yds at once!!

37. Paintbox
2mL turquoise all over; dipped into 15mL chestnut-sky mix; dipped another part in .5mL crimson; then 5mL emerald and 1mL black

38. Robin's Egg Blue

Dye Prep

Big order from Dharma on Jacquard dyes arrived last week, lots of new colors.  Mixed a 1% solution (that's a change from 3%, but the math will be SO much easier when I go to dye!  If it gets unwieldy, I'll change to 10%) of most of the Jacquard colors I have, and got 4 new colors made. Need more qt mason jars.

Yarn samples micro-skeined and ready for testing. Two different bases:  Universal Deluxe Worsted, which is white; and Pingouin DK, which is off-white.

Dye Prep

Got two more cases of quart mason jars, and plastic lids -- huge improvement. And found a spot for storing dye jars, too!  Today will continue mixing Jacquard stocks and my proprietary stocks, and hopefully start testing colors this afternoon!
